Sheriff's Department - History

1869 Seth M. Preshaw
No picture available

On April 4, 1869, Wyoming's first Territorial Governor John A. Campbell arrived in Cheyenne from Salem, Ohio. Campbell appointed Seth M. Preshaw as interim sheriff of Laramie County in May 1869. Preshaw served only five months. He ran for sheriff during the October 1869 election, but lost to Thomas Jefferson Carr.

Preshaw was born in Ohio in 1830 according to the 1870 Wyoming census. Like so many of his counterparts, his deeds were left unrecorded in a time when violent death was the story of the day.
