Sheriffs' Office - Reserve Program

Volunteer Service to Laramie County Citizens

The Laramie County Sheriffs' Office Reserves constitutes an organization of citizen volunteers who augment nearly all of theSheriffs' Office operations: patrol, jail, prisoner transport, court security, detectives, crime prevention and community relations, emergency operations, and women's handgun safety classes.

There are currently two classifications of Reserves:

Commissioned Reserves (Reserve Deputy Sheriff):

These deputies must obtain and maintain Wyoming POST Certification (required of all law enforcement officers in the state). They are uniformed and are utilized, in most cases, in all reserve operations. Each commissioned reserve may work along side the regular deputies, or may work independently on special projects.

Community Volunteer:

These non-commissioned volunteers are utilized in special capacities within the Sheriffs' Office. For example: assisting in the Women's Handgun Safety Classes, public relations and inmate visitation program. Although there is no POST Certification requirement, nor are they uniformed, they perform essential assistance in critical areas.

Begun in 1975, theSheriffs' Office Reserve Program was the first in Wyoming, and has served as the model for others throughout this state. Currently fifteen citizens from diverse occupations within the Laramie County area make up the Reserve Force.

As stated above, all members are unpaid volunteers who donate a minimum of 60 (sixty) hours per calendar quarter of volunteer service to maintain membership.

Each commissioned reserve deputy is provided Sheriffs' Office uniforms and associated equipment. Each reserve provides his or her own leather, vest and Sheriffs' Office approved weapon (as do the regular deputies.)

Are you interested in volunteering for a unique law enforcement opportunity in this county?

We're interested in talking to you if you can meet the following qualifications:

  • Currently Wyoming POST Certified or able to receive certification if you're from out of state.
  • Meet Sheriffs' Office employment requirements. This includes (at a minimum) WLEA Fitness Assessment, background investigation, written testing, oral board, polygraph, medical and psychological screening.
  • Willing to donate a minimum of sixty hours of service to the Sheriffs' Office each calendar quarter - in a variety of assignments!
  • Demonstrate a desire to serve your community in a most rewarding and productive way.
